Frank Sheedy Memorial Tournament

Frank Sheedy Memorial Football Tournament. Saturday & Sunday October 16th & 17th 2021. Venue: St Breckans GAA Club

On this weekend October 16th and 17th the St Breckans GAA Club will honour the memory of club legend Frank Sheedy with a Memorial U.14 Football Tournament.

Many of the present players at this age group will have never met or known Frank but within the walls of the St. Breckans Club his name is still spoken of with pride and respect. Frank was known all over the County for his tough playing style. He played with the old Lisdoonvarna team in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. He also played with Doolin when there was no team in the Spa.

Former team mate Michael McGrath recently stated ‘You, always felt protected when Frank was on the field.’ He would never stand back, from start to finish he gave everything he had. For friend or foe it would be wise to step aside when Frank was in full stride in his quest for the ball. He was not a dirty player but would never shy away from a confrontation. When St Breckans was formed in 1971 bringing combining the Lisdoon and Doolin teams, Frank was immediately involved. He served as a selector on many teams and was Club President for nearly two decades.

Whether it was a U.12 or senior game, Frank would always attend. He followed the Local Secondary School Team with Pat Harrington and whether it was a Handball or Badminton match in the Sports Complex he was there offering his unique passionate support. Frank passed away on December 2nd 2015 but his memory will not be forgotten by St Breckans members. The U.14 Tournament scheduled for this weekend in his memory is a fitting tribute to a man that loved the young football teams in his club.

The trophies and medals are sponsored by Frank’s sons, John, Frankie and Damien. The event co-ordinator is Michael Howley and teams will attend from Ennistymon, Doonbeg, Miltown Malbay, Kilmurry Ibrickane, Clann Lir and the host team St Breckans. Group stages will be played on Saturday 16th with the Plate Final on Sunday at 10am followed by the Shield Final. At 12.30pm the club will unveil the dedication of the Stand to Frank Sheedy. Blessing will take place by Fr. Rob McNamara PP.

This will be followed by the Frank Sheedy Memorial Cup Final.

The newly extended Sports Complex will also be blessed by Fr McNamara and will be open for refreshments.
